Panum Crater Trail

Panum Crater Trail: The turnoff to Panum Crater is off Hwy 120 east shortly before you get to the South Tufa Trail turnoff. While this is very close to the Tufa Trail, it is a very different hike. Hike is about 2 miles round trip with about 400' elevation gain so it is an easy trail.

Panum Crater was formed by a rhyolitic plug-dome volcano. You will see rhyolite, obsidian, pumice. There is crumble breccia and breadcrust bombs which were formed as chunks of molten lava were shot into the air. The surface cooled quickly and formed an outer skin, but the inside was still hot and full of gas. As you can see in slide 13, some of these large rocks that you would expect to be heavy are very light. In addition to the large variety of different kinds of lava, you will have 360 degree views of the whole valley and the Sierras, with great views of Mono Lake at the top. I highly recommend this trail. Really unusual.
